Francesco Celauro from Italy is the DC8 Doctoral Candidate (Process Scale) in the UPCYCLE MSCA Doctoral Network.
With a background in Environmental Engineering, Francesco is pursuing their PhD at the ChEMaRTS research group at KU Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Jo Van Caneghem and Prof. Giuseppe Granata.
Their research focuses on sustainability assessment, with particular attention to HTC/HTL of sewage sludge. Through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), prospective LCA and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) they will evaluate how process design decisions influence the environmental and economic sustainability of a developing technology, with a focus on optimizing the technology for industry deployment.
As part of the UPCYCLE training programme, Francesco will also collaborate with international partners through secondments at TU Darmstadt, Germany under the supervision of Prof. Arne Scholtissek, where they will refine modeling choices and integrate LCA of contaminated biomass gasification, and at Sulzer, Switzerland under the supervision of Dr. Irina Yarulina, where they will gain insight on industrial implementation of the models.
Their work contributes to advancing effective sustainability impact assessment of hard-to-recycle waste streams, supporting the transition toward a circular bioeconomy.
