Hazem Hamdy Ashour from Egypt is the DC7 Doctoral Candidate (process modelling and system integration) in UPCYCLE MSCA Doctoral Network.
With a background in Mechanical Engineering and Thermal Energy Management (EMJMD DENSYS), Hazem is pursuing a PhD at the Department of Energy Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana under the supervision of Prof. Mihael Sekavčnik and Prof. Tine Seljak.
His research focuses on establishing industrial symbiosis in full-scale HTC and HTL through process flexibility, with particular attention to dynamic modelling of HTC and HTL processes under variable energy and feedstock inputs. Through system-level modelling, reduced-order models, techno-economic analysis, and the use of real-world operational data, he will explore how these processes can adapt to variable energy and material flows while optimizing energy use, operational costs, and emissions.
As part of the UPCYCLE training programme, Hazem will collaborate with international partners through secondments at Politecnico di Milano, Italy under the supervision of Prof. Andrea Turolla, where he will work on coupling process models with LCA and techno-economic analysis, and at IOS, Slovenia under the supervision of Prof. Alexandra Lobnik, gaining insight into industrial implementation and validation of HTC and HTL technologies.
His work contributes to advancing sustainable waste management and circular bioeconomy, supporting the development of more sustainable and resource-efficient solutions.
