Sophie Shrees from Nepal is the DC2 Doctoral Candidate (Process Scale) in the UPCYCLE MSCA Doctoral Network.
With a background in Environmental Technology and Engineering, Sophie is pursuing her PhD at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Politecnico di Milano under the supervision of Andrea Turolla and Elena Ficara.
Her research focuses on resource recovery from hard-to-recycle biogenic waste, with particular attention to the valorisation of pyrolysis products derived from sewage sludge. Through a combination of experimental studies, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), she aims to identify and develop sustainable pathways for upgrading recovered products into higher-value bio-based compounds.
As part of the UPCYCLE training programme, Sophie will collaborate with international partners through secondments at KU Leuven (Belgium) under the supervision of Jo Van Caneghem, where she will focus on developing tools for feasibility and sustainability assessment, and at Gruppo CAP (Italy) under the mentorship of Davide Scaglione, where she will investigate the valorisation of output streams from industrial-scale pyrolysis processes.
Her work contributes to advancing circular bioeconomy and sustainable waste management strategies, supporting the development of efficient and scalable solutions for transforming waste into valuable resources.
We’re excited to follow Sophie’s research journey and look forward to the insights her work will bring. 🚀
