Hesham Qatan

Hesham Qatan from Yemen is the DC9 Doctoral Candidate (Reactor Scale) in UPCYCLE MSCA Doctoral Network

With a background in Chemical Engineering, Hesham is pursuing a PhD at the the Department of Materials Engineering (MTM), ChEMaRTS research group at KU Leuven under the supervision of Johan De Greef and Maarten Vanierschot.

His research focuses on waste thermochemical treatment, with particular attention to hard-to-recycle waste combustion. Through multi-scale modelling, he will develop an advanced predictive numerical model that can be used for optimization and control of waste combustion processes.

As part of the UPCYCLE training programme, Hesham will collaborate with international partners through secondments at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Spain under the supervision of Maria Ventura, where he will work on the catalytic effect of inorganic contaminants, and at Vyncke, Belgium under the supervision of Dr. Hans Fastenaekels, gaining insight into industrial implementation of the model.

His work contributes to advancing sustainable waste management and resource recovery, supporting the development of more sustainable waste-to-energy solutions, reducing environmental impact, and making better use of resources.

We’re excited to follow Hesham’s research journey and look forward to the insights his work will bring. 🚀
